J. Ralph Atkin, a lifelong resident of St. George, Utah is a graduate of Dixie State University, (AS), Brigham Young University (BS) Accounting, Golden Gate University (MBA) and the University of Utah (JD). He is a member of the Utah State Bar, as well as a member of the State Bar’s Business Law and Probate/Trust Law sections. Mr. Atkin was elected the Washington County Attorney in 1970 and served one term. He served as the Chairman of the Utah Travel Council for nine years and after that, he served as the Director of Economic Development for the State of Utah, from 1991-1993. In his role as Director of Economic Development he planned, organized and conducted several trade missions with the Governor; these missions were in Asia, Mexico, Europe and Washington DC. He has maintained a private law practice in St. George with an emphasis in Business and Estate Planning. Mr. Atkin founded SkyWest Airlines in 1972, retired as the Chairman in 1992 and retired from the Board in 2016. SkyWest Inc. is a publicly traded company. He was involved in several mergers and acquisitions in addition to being heavily involved in the initial public offering of SkyWest stock. Ralph has also created airlines in Europe (Austria 1995) and West Africa (Ghana 2005). With the development of those airlines, he dealt directly with many levels of government including the President of Ghana. He holds a private pilot license for single/multi engine. Ralph and his wife Cheri are both members of Dixie State University’s National Advisory Council (NAC) as well has co-chairs of the Centennial Campaign Committee. He also serves on the board of TruHearing, Inc. a private company. He served an LDS Mission to England and continues his service on many church activities. The Atkins have eight children and twenty-five grandchildren.
